Meeting People Where They’re At

Happy August, Friends ~

As this note glides into your inbox, I hope it finds you in the midst of enjoying pleasant summertime contentment.

And, If you are experiencing a time of unease, I invite you to give yourself grace. The ebb and flow of life can make us feel wobbly at times. Breathe in deeply, and breathe out slowly; you are not alone.

The quote by Teepa Snow is shared as an important reminder of our tendency to identify with a diagnosis. This labeling can be a slippery slope, and often detrimental to our mental health.

In the context of dementia, perception plays a critical role in how we relate to the person who's been diagnosed. Understand your loved one to be a person living with dementia. This seemingly small nuance has big implications.

Practice stepping into their current reality to be in a conversation that aligns with their best interests in the moment. Described as compassionate deception, this strategy can support improved communication when a person is no longer oriented to person, place, or time.
