Equanimity is an Inside Job

I wrote and dated this note to myself on August 2, 2023. What prompted me to write that sentence almost a year and a half ago is unrecallable, yet I was intrigued to find it again in my desk drawer as 2025 begins.

I love the word, equanimity. Even more so, I love its meaning: mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation.

Equanimity achieved by our own internal resources reflects unique strength and is more resilient to protect us from being affected by external circumstances.

In previous notes, I’ve referenced themes I observe in my work with clients. Given the focus of my practice centers on issues of aging, it is understandable for me to hear about commonly shared experiences among clients. My curiosity heightens in the nuances of those experiences. I find it fascinating to witness the ways in which people respond to seemingly similar ~ yet vastly different, based on every individual’s uniqueness ~ situations.

Lately, I’ve noticed themes in statements I hear myself say regularly and as I like to do, I am inclined to share them with you.

*This note became quite long, so I've decided to share these in bite-sized pieces (stay tuned for future episodes).

Here's the first one:

“I am speaking to myself as much as I am speaking to you.”

This is my way of reminding clients that I, too, am human. I experience the same continuum of emotions as everyone else, that make up the human condition. I’ve spent a lifetime learning to adapt and cope and manage as best I can to move through life. When I offer guidance, it comes from my own truth, because I’ve tried on the tools I offer to others. In learning what has worked and not worked for me, I can authentically invite others to try something on for themselves.

In this first new month of a new year, I hope your journey is one of equanimity. I am intentional to continue creating content, classes, and groups to fuel this state of well being, both for myself and for those around me.

Happy January and Welcome 2025!
